About

The Great Orisha of Purity, Wisdom, and Peace

Who is Obatala (Orisanla)?

Obatala, revered worldwide as Orisanla ("The Great Orisha"), is one of the most powerful and venerated deities in Yoruba belief. Working directly under the supreme God, Olodumare, Obatala is honored as the creator of human bodies and the father of many Orishas.

Our tradition is built upon his timeless virtues: immaculate purity, unshakable truth, and deep moral authority. We are a global community dedicated to preserving this deep spiritual and cultural system rooted in ancient Yoruba history. We teach respect for all life, moral discipline, and peaceful leadership.

Due to the transatlantic slave trade, the worship of Obatala spread beyond Africa:
In the Americas:
In Cuba → Obatala is part of Santería
In Brazil → worshipped in Candomblé
In Haiti → influences Vodou
Even in these places, Obatala remains associated with purity, wisdom, and creation.

The Obatala (Orisanla) tradition is a deep spiritual and cultural system rooted in Yoruba history. It teaches:
Respect for life
Moral discipline
Peaceful leadership
Responsibility for human creation

Morality & Justice

Obatala is the ultimate representative of truth and ethical leadership. He is the moral compass of the Yoruba cosmos, constantly called upon in disputes to provide fair, peaceful, and calm guidance.

Ritual Purity

Followers of Orisanla embrace strict cleanliness and self-discipline. We wear white clothing to symbolize an unstained character, maintain ritual purity, and traditionally avoid alcohol to honor Obatala's teachings.

Global Diaspora

Because of the transatlantic history, Obatala’s worship evolved but remained unbroken. Today, his pure energy is celebrated globally as ObatalĂ¡ in Cuban SanterĂa, in Brazilian CandomblĂ©, and in Haitian Vodou.

The Origins of Humanity at Ile-Ife

Our tradition originates from the ancient Yoruba city of Ile-Ife, the spiritual birthplace of the Yoruba people. According to oral tradition, Olodumare sent Obatala from heaven to create the earth. Equipped with a chain, sand, and a chicken, Obatala poured sand upon the primeval waters. The chicken spread it to form solid land—birthing Ile-Ife.

After forming the land, Obatala was tasked with molding human bodies from clay. Oral history teaches a profound lesson in compassion: while working, he drank palm wine and mistakenly created imperfect bodies. Upon realizing his error, he forbade palm wine and became the fierce protector of people with disabilities, emphasizing empathy and responsibility.

The presence of Obatala is recognized through his sacred symbols: The White Cloth (representing absolute purity), the Snail Shell (symbolizing creation and soothing life), the Opa Orisa Staff (his divine authority), and the Dove (peace).
